While preparing for the first class in my new Mental Health Tools series, I went on a simple shamanic journey to ask what was needed and I met Burdock Root along the path. While writing the class about mental health allies, I hadn’t considered talking about Burdock Root in my teaching.  Boy was I wrong.

Healing Ally: Burdock Root

Burdock, Articium Lappa, will help those who worry over the unknown. It also helps someone afraid of becoming more hearty, while it brings the tenacious wanderer back to their original path. These aspects make Burdock a powerful healing ally during these tumultuous times.

Ingesting the root by eating it or brewing tea, can help heal dry scaly skin conditions such as, eczema, psoriasis, and dandruff. Burdock’s leaves can treat mastitis, bacterial and fungal infections as a poultice or tea. Her seeds are helpful for cystitis and skin conditions. Burdock has alterative, hepatic, phytoestrogenic, nutritive, hypoglycemic, and antimicrobial properties.

What I found most fascinating about burdock are its energetic properties. In her book, “Herbal Medicine from the Heart of the Earth”, herbalist and author Sharon Tilgner speaks of Burdock as being a giving and nourishing creature. The plant gifts are nutrition and movement. Her seed pods often hop a ride by attaching to anything that passes by. You can think of this plant as a ball of energy that flies through your body, opening your energy channels. A true healing ally, it stimulates the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, skin, digestion and lymphatic systems. Burdock is an ally we all might need in today’s difficult world.
