“Old writers tell us there is no better herb for gladdening and strengthening the heart,”.

Maud Grieve, twentieth century herbalist.

As a member of the mint family, Leonurus Cardiaca or Motherwort has an affinity for supporting health cardiac and pelvic systems. She is a supportive herb for a variety of complaints including: premenstrual symptoms, pelvic congestion, congestive amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, nervousness, hyperthyroidism, stress induced high blood pressure, insomnia due to anxiety and nerve pain from herpes (zoster or simplex).

Motherwort acts as a pelvic decongestant, hypotensive, antispasmodic, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, cardiotonic, and emmenagogue. This plant is high in calcium and contains tannins, which can help stop diarrhea when drank as a tea.

It can also be useful to support depression, restlessness, and disturbed sleep from either emotional or physical ailments of the heart.

The name Motherwort is apropos for its energetic properties. It is an herbal ally to overworked mothers and menopausal women. A few drops of a tincture or sips during meditation or journey can connect a woman in need to the essence of the divine mother.

You should always consult your physician before starting botanical medicine to meet your individual needs.

A Supportive Ally for Vitality

Motherwort is an excellent ally in supporting the qualities of human vitality.  In A. H. Almaas Diamond Approach teachings, Almaas presents the concept of true nature or essence.  Essence is the untouched nature of who we are without ego or personality. The essence of red or strength is vitality, capacity and expansion. It is in this essence that we find the courage and strength to express and explore our own vitality.
